Sheriff Bouchard says he opposes a reduction in Michigan’s prison population, but over 1,800 criminals were awarded early releases from the jail he ran during his time as Oakland County sheriff. (Detroit Free Press, September 13, 2007 and September 27, 2009)
Sheriff Bouchard touted the construction of a $14 million work release facility as a means to ease jail overcrowding and save tax dollars, but a senior jail official later said the facility did little to curb overcrowding because most criminals did not have jobs and wound up back at the main jail. Sheriff Bouchard’s office mistakenly released 14 criminals from the Oakland County jail in 2005. (The Detroit News, August 23, 2005)
